Spanish Verb MEDIR: to measure

The Spanish verb medir means 'to measure ' and is an irregular Spanish IR verb.

To remember this, imagine measuring water from the MEDIterranean Sea!

Around 30 verbs are conjugated like medir, replacing the e with an i in the present, preterite, subjunctive and imperative tenses.
During the second part of October a new irregular IR verb is featured each day to enable you to consolidate this IR verb family. You will learn other verbs such as comedirse, despedir, embestir, expedir, pedir and others.

        USING the SPANISH VERB MEDIR      

Spanish verb medir - measure medir can also mean: to weigh up, to consider, to take into account.
medirse (vr): to measure oneself; to try on (Mex, Ven, Col)
Mide 1.50m de alto: He measures 1.5m in height.

Spanish to measure is medir medir las consecuencias: to consider (weigh up) the consequences.
medir las palabras: to consider one's words.
medir los riesgos: to weigh up the risks.

Spanish for measure is medir la medida (nf): measurement (a specific number).
la medición (nf): measurement (act of measuring).

you informal vos replaces - you, informal, singular -
- in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and also in some countries of Central America.
Sometimes it also replaces the formal singular 'Usted'.
In irregular IR verbs, the conjugations remain the same as for except for the addition of accents in the following tenses:
Presente:      vos medís
Imperativo:  ¡medí!
