Spanish Verb PRETENDER: to expect

The Spanish verb pretender means 'to expect' and is a regular Spanish ER verb.

Spanish verb pretender - expect pretender can also mean: to try to, to aspire to.
pretender ser (eg profesor): to hope to become (a teacher).

Spanish to expect is pretender la pretensión (nf): aspiration, hope, wish, desire, claim.
tener pretensiones: to be pretentious.
pretencioso / pretenciosa (adj m/f): pretentious, showy; vain.
pretendido (pp/adj): so-called, false, proposed, supposed.
Fuera o no pretendido ...: Whether intended or not...
con pretendido interés: with false interest.

Spanish for expect is pretender Beware of this almost False Friend!
pretender can mean to pretend (to be), to (lay) claim,
but its meaning is more limited in Spanish than in English, so remember also:
aparentar: to pretend, to feign, to show off.
fingir: to pretend, to feign, to fake.
hacerse pasar por: to pretend to be.


Spanish verb pretender is to expect vos replaces - you, informal, singular -
- in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and also in some countries of Central America.
Sometimes it also replaces the formal singular 'Usted'.
In regular ER verbs, the conjugations remain the same as for except for the addition of accents in the following tenses:
Presente:      vos pretendés
Imperativo:  ¡pretendé!
