Spanish Verb PREVENIR: to prevent, to warn

The Spanish verb prevenir means 'to prevent ' and is an irregular Spanish IR verb.

To remember this, imagine she warns us to PREVENT HERE any problems!

Prevenir like venir makes numerous conjugation changes, so be aware and practise them.
During the second part of October a new irregular IR verb is featured each day to enable you to consolidate some of the IR verb families. You will learn other verbs with similar patterns such as venir, convenir, contravenir and prevenir.

prevenirse contra algo: to take preventative measures/precautions against something; to be warned.
prevenido/a (pp/adj): warned, prepared, ready.
estar prevenido/a: to be well-prepared/well-organised.

Spanish to prevent is prevenir preventivo/a (adj m/f): preventative, preventive.
la prevención (nf): prevention, precaution.
la prevención de la delincuencia: crime prevention.

Spanish for prevent is prevenir Más vale/mejor es prevenir que curar: Prevention is better than cure.
Más vale/mejor es prevenir que lamentar: It's better to be safe than sorry (preventing is better than crying).

you informal vos replaces - you, informal, singular -
- in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and also in some countries of Central America.
Sometimes it also replaces the formal singular 'Usted'.
In irregular IR verbs, the conjugations remain the same as for except for the addition of accents in the following tenses:
Presente:      vos prevenís
Imperativo:  ¡prevení!
