Spanish Verb ALCANZAR: to reach

The Spanish verb alcanzar means 'to reach' and is an irregular Spanish ZAR verb.

To remember this, imagine telling your friend AL that he CAN reach the top and be a CZAR if he tries ... AL CAN be CZAR!

Around 900 verbs are conjugated like alcanzar, and for the month of May a new irregular ZAR verb is featured each day to enable you to consolidate the ZAR verb family. You will learn other verbs such as actualizar, amenazar, analizar, autorizar, cazar and many others.

alcanzar can also mean: to make it, to achieve; to overtake, to catch (up with); to hit, to affect.
alcanzar a: to manage to; to be enough.
alcanzarle algo a alguien: to pass something to someone. alcanzar destino/los objectivos/al limite: to reach a destination/goals/the limit.

el alcance (nm): reach, range, scope.
al alcance de / posible de alcanzar: within reach of.
al alcance de la mano: at hand.
estar a mi alcance: to be wtihin my reach.
estar fuera de mi alcance: to be out of my reach.

¡No me alcanzas! You can't catch me!
alcanza una velocidad de: It reaches a speed of .
Alcanzó a terminarlo: S/he managed to finish it.
Hasta donde alcanzo a ver: As far as I can see.
¡Alcánzame una silla, por favour! Pass me a chair, please.

vos replaces tú - you, informal, singular -
- in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and also in some countries of Central America.
Sometimes it also replaces the formal singular 'Usted'.
In irregular ZAR verbs, the conjugations remain the same as for tú except for the addition of accents in the following tenses:
Presente: vos alcanzás
Subjuntivo: vos alcancés
Imperativo: ¡alcanzá! ¡No alcancés!
