On this day...

Le 1er juin 1958 Le Général Charles De Gaulle, est devenu le premier président de la Vème République, (la République après guerre) . Les français ne pourront jamais oublier ce jour.

General Charles De Gaulle became the first President of the 5th Republic of France, (Post-War Republic) on the 1st June 1958. French people will never forget the day.

Conversation between two teenagers:

Marie:
As-tu aimé le cours d’Histoire?
Did you enjoy the history class?

Jean:
Pas vraiment…Quand je pense à tous ceux qui ont vécu la guerre, ça me rends triste.
Not really… When I think of all many people who lived through the war, it makes me sad.

Marie:
C’est vrai, mais il y a eu une fin et la Veme république.
It’s true, but there was an end and the 5th Republic.

Jean:
Oui t’as raison.
Yes, you’re right.

Marie:
Mes grands parents étaient là quand Le Général De Gaulle est devenu le premier président de la Vème République, et m’ont dit que c’était vraiment un très heureux évènement.
