baisser et abaisser

The two words on baisser et abaisser are very similar in use. The difference between the two is subtle, and you will be completely UNDERSTOOD if you use the two interchangeably.

However abaisser would (generally) suggest something more 'long lasting'.

  • baisser les prix: drop prices;
  • baisser le taux de chômage: lower the unemployment rate;
  • baisser le taux de croissance: lower the growth rate;
  • baisser le niveau de productivité: lower the level of productivity;

  • faire baisser: to cause to lower something;
  • faire baisser les yeux: to stare;
  • baisser les yeux: to lower one's eyes;
