Teaching Modern Foreign Languages in Schools Using Accelerated Learning Software

Many modern foreign languages (MFL) teachers have difficulty in attracting, and retaining the interest of students who are studying languages in schools. Teaching vocabulary is one of the areas of difficulty.

The 200 Words a Day! techniques, which use the teachings of the world's memory masters, might hold the solution if this sounds like you might be facing.

There are several issues. But there with with modern techniques solutions to ALL these problems.

  1. There is SO MUCH vocabulary to learn, so there is a lot of work in REMEMBERING.
  2. Learning vocabulary is such a big job, usually heavily reliant on repetition that it becomes a tedious slog.
  3. Students then can lose interest.
  4. There is the added complication of learning the GENDERS of nouns for many languages like Spanish, German, French, Italian, Welsh, Portuguese as well as others.
  5. If the student does not put the words into use, there is the later difficulty of RECALLING the word.
Note the differentiation between:
  1. REMEMBERING - getting material IN TO the students' brains... and...
  2. RECALLING - getting material OUT OF the students' brains.
The 200 Words a Day! system modern foreign language teaching techniques have fun, easy solutions to all the above problems.

By giving a cartoon Memory Trigger the student is more easily able to learn the word, and REMEMBER it and then RECALL it.

And they are all computer based with software that enables the teacher to see all the results of all the students, as well as the words or phrases that are causing the class difficulties. This allows the teacher to then focus on those particular words, phrases, expressions or concepts that are causing bother, and to then focus some teaching energy into that area.

So it becomes laser focussed learning.

This version of software is called the 'Managed Learning Environment' software. Which means that the modern foreign languages teacher can monitor ten, fifty, 100 or 200+ students as they progress through the course on their own computers in the class room.

The MFL teacher can monitor each student's progress and see where the class is doing well, and where the the MFL class is not doing so well. If a word or concept is causing the MFL students bother, the teacher can quickly focus a quick review, a class discussion, some homework (or even a lesson) on that topic.

All the results come up in easy-to-read charts and in an easy-to-use teacher-friendly format.

Here's how the 200 Words a Day! courses overcome the problems outlined above, and enable the students to learn, remember and recall loads of vocabulary in a short period of time.

Each word is taught with a Memory Trigger Cartoon

The world's Memory Masters teach us that to best remember something it is best to put that thing into a silly, zany scene that somehow reminds you of the object or concept. We do so and include a silly cartoon with it so that it is easier to remember the concept.

This of course appeals to MFL school students and the feedback that we get is very, very favourable.

Because the software incorporates several learning styles - visual, auditory, kinesthetic, plus a healthy injection of humour, silly voices and text. The students can even make up their own triggers!

Software has been bought via word of mouth...

Most of the software that is now operating in schools around the United Kingdom and the United States, and other countries, was initially bought by a modern foreign languages teacher who used the 'private home version' and then, liking it, decided to try it on the kids at school. Often the teacher would try this with his or her own software connected to the school system as a bit of a trial.

Then they have contacted us and ordered the schools version.

If you are a teacher, and you are interested in talking to some of these other teachers, please contact us so that we can put you in touch with teachers using the software.

The Memory Trigger makes RECALL easier

The cartoon Memory Trigger makes RECALL easier for the MFL student. The more memory hooks, the deeper embedded is the item in to the subconscious and so the easier is the recall.

All Words have a Memory Trigger to make GENDER LEARNING easier

Each 200 Words a Day! Memory Trigger has a way of remembering the gender of nouns in modern foreign languages learning.

An ingenious way that nobody in modern foreign languages education has yet matched.

Each feminine noun features a female character as the 'STAR'of the Memory Trigger cartoon.

Each masculine noun features a male character as the 'STAR'of the Memory Trigger cartoon.

And where possible we use famous people as the characters that 'STAR' in the cartoon Memory Triggers. This makes the memorizing process so much easier for the MFL student.

For German language MFL students the neuter gender features a special Gender Trigger. Each neuter gender features in the cartoon Memory Trigger, a smoking animal. So for example, the German for the noun 'the bath' is 'das Bad' features a badger smoking in the bath. The badger is saying "I feel BAD!"

The silly cartoon makes it easier to remember the word, with the link between the bad badger, the bath, the text, the voices that narrate the text making it so much easier to remember.

The smoking badger reminds the student that the word is neuter.
