As in English, the French word condamnation belongs to a legal context. The verb condamner is synonymous with the English verb, "to sentence, to convict".
Be careful! The French word conviction means "belief".
However, French people can also use the French word condamnation in many situations such as:
June 6th, 2008.
A French court is sentencing eBay to pay a substantial amount of money.
The website allowed an Internet user to sell imitation luxury products.
The country knows no similar sentence. The Court judged that eBay was partly responsible as it provided the means that permitted the illegal sales.
Previously, only the imitators were convicted to pay fines but never the sites on which the merchandise was sold.
eBay's leaders recognised they did not fight effectively enough against the imitators but the court is not forcing them to do work more in this regard, whereas it had this power.
The online auction giant has to wait for two other verdicts that will be returned by the end of June which relate to cases put up by two prestigious brands.
This time, the fine is going to be even more substantial.
